The golden shallot originating from Palestine and developed in France (Allium cepa aggregatum) is a spring planted bulb that is oval or elongated in shape. It produces clusters of new bulbs on a common base. It can multiply by vegetative growth from other shallot bulbs.
The name "Golden Shallot" is used in Australia to differentiate those bulbs from the spring onion - often called shallots. The true Golden Shallot however is a small golen-coloured shallot and while it is popular, true stock is hard to find in order to buy. The smooth taste of these true Shallots is magnificent and comes from the original variety which is over 80 years old. This unique taste is one you will always remember and appreciate.
Crusaders brought shallots home from the ancient Palestinian city of Ascalon and introduced them to the West.
