The "rocambole" variety is so named for its "rock-like" shape. Like other "hardnecks" it contains a central hard stalk which sends up a flower head which is sterile. The wrappers around the bulb are a blotchy-purple colour. The cloves are brownish and sometimes with a red hue. The cloves are arranged in a circle around the flower stalk and have a "full" flavour.
